What is Migrapolis?

“Migrapolis” is shown weekly featuring different cultures meeting in Norway. It is a magazine programme about minorities interacting with the majority. Mainly it is a programme where you meet people, living in a modern multicultural society.

“Migrapolis” is a critical journalistic product, focusing on both the positive and negative effects of the meeting of cultures in Norway.

Who is our audience?

“Migrapolis’” goal is to increase understanding and reduce racism and fear of the unknown. We endeavour to reach a cross-section of the ethnic Norwegian audience and to show them things they don`t know about life in multicultural Norway. We also want to reach the multiethnic audience to show them how the majority meet diversity and how minorities meet the rest of the society.

“Migrapolis” is shown in primetime on Norways major tv-channel, NRK1, and also at the second NRK-channel, NRK 2, averaging 310.000 viewers a week.

Migrapolis, who makes it?

“Migrapolis” is produced by an international multi-ethnic staff. We aim to have reporters from various backgrounds, using their own cultural references to present stories. Our staff numbers approximately 16, several of them working with news alongside their work in Migrapolis. Currently the Migrapolis staff come from Norway, USA, Vietnam, Pakistan, Chile, Sri Lanka, France and Turkey.

“Migrapolis” is made by the Oslo regional bureau of the Norwegian Broadcasting Company, NRK, which is Norway’s largest tv and radio network, and a public service broadcaster.

History and format.

“Migrapolis” first aired on 18th September 1997. Since then we have produced a weekly edition, reaching about 40 programmes per year.

In each programme three reporters focus on the same subject, using their native tounge in their commentary if they want to, as they explore their assigned stories.

Each edition contains three separate but parallel stories comprising a 30 minute broadcast. The stories are told in three different sections, so the entire programme is a composite of nine sections edited together.
